Dear Traveler,

With spring nearly here and summer not far behind, now is the perfect time to plan your summer vacation and take advantage of the tremendous values available now. Yes, most of us have had to cut back on spending, but with all the great travel deals available, there’s no need to give up your hard-earned vacation.

In this issue of Departures, we focus on areas of the world where your vacation dollar goes a long way. For example, we encourage you to take advantage of the extremely favorable exchange rate in New Zealand. If you’ve ever dreamed of visiting this scenically stunning area of the world, now is the time to make that dream a reality.

Another area known for its scenic beauty is Alaska, and this year we’ve seen some great deals on cruises to The Great Land—with more options than before.

If a tropical getaway is more your style, learn why Dominica may be one of the Caribbean’s best-kept secrets. And if you’re looking for family vacation ideas, we have several suggestions for you to consider.

We invite you to sit back, relax, and enjoy this issue of Departures.

Sincerely,

Spotlight on Dominica

Less developed than many of the Caribbean Islands, Dominica appeals to adventure seekers and those who appreciate the natural beauty of a tropical rainforest. From the lush mountain peaks rising to almost 5,000 feet to the numerous rivers and waterfalls, Dominica defies Caribbean stereotypes of white sand and swaying palms.

More than 1,000 species of plant and animal life can be found throughout the island’s rainforest, and there are a number of National parks or reserves on the island. Morne Trois Pitons National Park, a 17,000-acre World Heritage Site, contains the majority of Dominica’s above-water famous sights such as crater lakes and waterfalls. The Northern Forest Reserve is the home of Dominica’s national bird, the rare Sisserou Parrot. And Cabrits National Park contains the partially restored Fort Shirley. This park is also a marine reserve, as is the area around Scott’s Head/Soufriere at the southwestern tip of the island.

Dominica is one of the best places in the Caribbean to dive, whale and dolphin watch, hike, and bird watch. Hikers can choose from several trails, ranging from easy to demanding. Several major cruise lines, including Carnival, Celebrity, Holland America, and Princess, visit Dominica. So even if your time on the island is limited, you’ll be able to sample the island’s highlights. Following are some popular shore excursions:

''

Rainforest Aerial Tram
A winding, bumpy road takes you across lush valleys and steep hills to an elevation of about 2,000 feet, where the aerial tram starts. The tram glides over the beautiful rain forest, affording spectacular views from every direction.

Ocean Kayaking & Snorkeling
This is a perfect combination of
paddling and viewing Dominica’s rich undersea life.

Hike to Middleham Falls
This 4-hour shore excursion is for the physically fit and takes you into the rain forest for a one hour hike to the beautiful Middleham Falls. Participants can swim in the natural pool at the base of the falls before hiking back to the trailhead.

Best of Dominica and Folklore Show
This 4-hour tour provides an overview of the island, giving the participants a chance to see historical Morne Bruce, the Canefield Estate, and Springfield Guest House. At Springfield, a live cultural show is presented, and the tour ends in the rainforest at famous Trois Piton National park.
